Does anyone know if there's a way to turn off the "improved" text selection in IE? I can't find anything in the Internet Options. In case it's not clear what I'm talking about, this is where IE will automagically expand the selected area to include whole words, and/or the space after words.

Hi Gen, Are your meaning the Accelerator? If so, please take the following steps in IE8 to disable it. Tools / Internet Options / Advanced / Browsing / Display Accelerator on selection. Please uncheck the item. Hope it helps.

I'm talking about Internet Explorer modifying my selection when selecting text with the mouse.For instance, if I click in the middle of a word and drag to the right, the selected area will automatically expand to include the whole word that I just clicked in the middle of. It will also select whole words, plus the space after the words. I just checked in wordpad. Wordpad does this too. In Vista's Wordpad, it's called "Automatic Word Selection", and can be turned off. No such option in windows 7.Thanks

I agree with you. I also do not like it to select more than what I want.I just tried to help you as it is possible without option. Problem is that this is not the only problem in IE.You can use other browser :)I do not like firefox because it is most stupid browser possible, but I can recommend you Safari or Opera.And opera and safari select exactly what you wantOpera even can be controled with voice, but it have problems displaying pages of this forum.Opera also have very cool themes. Opera havemost beautiful themes and a lot of features integrated. The only thing I do not like in opera is that it does not open dropdown list if I start typing in form fields.

I have seen this behavior in the Help and Support files, IE8, Wordpad. The only exception appears to be Notepad. You might want to let the Windows 7 Product Team know about your preferences. The more users that request certain functions, the more likely they are to be changed. This an OLD topic and post, but I've finally had enough and was looking for the answer. So, for the next person belatedly looking for a resolution.... What worked for me, the answer for Win7, IE8: Tools / Internet Options / Advanced / Browsing / Display Accelerator on selection. Clear this checkbox. Why an accelerator causes the whole word or double words to be selected I don't understand, but by clearing the checkbox my cursor now stays where I put it and only selects what I click and drag to select.
